Learn How to Swim

Group swim lessons are available to SRWC members during the spring and fall semesters. These lessons provide a fun and supportive environment to learn lifelong aquatic skills while connecting with your peers. Each session runs as a 4-week class.

Important Details:

  • A minimum of six participants is required to host the class.
  • No make-up sessions are scheduled for missed classes.
  • The first lesson will include:
    A skills assessment
  • An overview of pool rules
  • Essential water safety information

 

Based on the group size and participants’ needs, instructors may divide the class into smaller subgroups for specialized instruction during the remaining three weeks.

Below are the objectives for each potential subgroup:

Group Lessons

Group I - Water Exploration

This group focuses on helping participants feel comfortable in the water and safely use the pool. Skills taught include:
  • Breathing control
  • Assisted floating
  • Glides and kicking

Group II - Primary Skills

This group emphasizes movement-based water skills, such as:

  • Floating without support
  • Retrieving objects from the pool bottom (shallow water)
  • Introduction to swimming strokes

Group III - Stroke Preparation

This group aims to help participants refine swimming strokes and improve coordination. Skills include: 

 
  • Front crawl, back crawl and backstroke 
  • Treading water 
  • Enhancing ease, efficiency and power for longer distances and durations
