Take a Look Into the Past
The Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) has been a cornerstone of health and wellness at Long Beach State University (LBSU) since its opening in 2010. Built to promote physical activity, mental well-being and community engagement, the SRWC continues to evolve, offering state-of-the-art facilities and programs that enrich the student experience. From its inception, the center has been dedicated to fostering a culture of holistic wellness for all members of the campus community.
In the fall, ASI conducted an online survey that asked students about their recreational needs. Roughly 8,000 students responded to the survey, or 23% of the student body at that time. The results showed that 79% of students were unaware of what a student recreation center would entail. Additionally, the results showed that 80% of the students said they engaged in some type of recreation off campus, and that 54% were in support of building the SRWC.
ASI launched an educational campaign to propose the construction of a 126,000-square-foot facility in a student fee referendum.
On Feb. 27 to 28, 2007, a fee referendum took place for the SRWC. Overwhelmingly, students voted for the SRWC with an approval rate of 74.7% and 25.2% voting against it.
